DEVIANT: GENDER INCLUSIVE NARRATIVES OF KINK
Exhibited at Chaussee36, Berlin, April 2024
DEVIANT: GENDER INCLUSIVE NARRATIVES OF KINK offers a glimpse into the concealed realm of queer femme individuals actively involved in the Berlin BDSM scene. Its aim is to present a fresh perspective on female domination and BDSM, diverging from the male-centric imagery prevalent in erotic portrayals. The objective was to challenge preconceptions and objectification projected onto queer individuals in the scene by shifting the focus from sexual explicitness to emotional intensity and physical beauty. Embracing a collaborative approach with the models, the creator, a sex worker and member of the LGBTQIA+ and BDSM community, sought to provide an intimate and non-voyeuristic exploration of these practices.
The showcased images, captured in the first half of 2023, span various locations like BDSM dungeons, brothels, private residences, and outdoor settings. Utilizing Polaroid—a medium steeped in queer community history—the creator seized spontaneous, intimate moments while maintaining a documentary approach. The resulting images often exhibit a blurred or overexposed quality, emphasizing the immediacy and unfiltered nature of each capture. With a dual role as a sex worker and a participant in the queer BDSM community, the creator offers a unique and non-voyeuristic perspective into this often misunderstood and misrepresented fellowship. The project aims to dismantle common assumptions associated with these practices and communities, empowering members to reclaim control over their representation.
